BRIDLINGTON ALL AT SEA



On Sunday 14 September 2009, Ionians started their season with an emphatic victory over Bridlington. The score line of 71- 3 is a clear indication to future opposition of the awesome power and pace of this years squad.
Although Bridlington’s defence looked sturdy for the first five minutes, the continual charges from Ionians attack soon broke them down.
Full back Sam Wilson opened the scoring as he came into the line between the centres after quickly recycled ball wall moved through the slick back liner.
This years captain Danny Casson led by example throughout the game and scored the first of his 2 tries in a typical Casson style, bursting through a number of tackles and charging 25 yards to the line. His second later in the game was another individual try when he took the ball blind and cleverly kicked through and winning the chase for the ball controlling it over the line to score.
The powerful Ionians pack dominated in all aspects and looked at ease lifting as Elliot Hodges and Joe Reynard reached great heights in the line outs.
Other tries were scored by No 6 ,Tom Doris, who’s work in the loose, earned him this weeks Man of the Match award. Forwards Elliot Hodges and Joe Midgely also forced their way over the line and Will Heylings (2 tries), Henry Waine and new addition Josh Pooley (2 tries) demonstrated the pace and power of the back line.
The kicking duties were shared out after no 10 Hammersley converted 4.
The game was stopped 10 minutes into the second half due to an unfortunate injury resulting in the Bridlington No 7 being taken to hospital by ambulance.
In the 40 minutes played, Ionians scored 11 tries and showed their determination to retain their Lexus and Yorkshire titles.
