Yorkshire Champions 2009

Ionians are the undisputed Yorkshire champions.

On Sunday 26 April 2009, Hull Ionians hosted the Yorkshire Cup finals at various age groups. I’s won at under 15s and in the finals held at Moortown, the under 19’s achieved a huge victory over Doncaster academy.

Hull Ionians under 16’s faced this years bogey team York, who have come from nowhere to having turned over some of the biggest clubs in the County this year.
I’s were at full strength other than the injured centre Torkington but a quick reshuffle resulted in a potentially lethal back line supporting a pack with a great deal of strength in depth.

York have this season made it their business to compete up front and turn over or spoil the ball wherever possible. The commitment and success of their pack being unrecognisable from years before. The game was therefore lined up for a giant clash.

Ionians started well and quickly ventured into the York half with a huge kick from Hammersley. There they remained for almost the whole of the half. A number of attacks created chances but points went begging as desperate York defence held firm or poor handling wasted golden opportunities.

For the first 20 minutes, Alex Griffiths and Elliot Hodges dominated the line outs and the resulting possession saw Isaac Green reach the line but held up, Henry Waine came close on several occasions and a telling break from scrum half Willingham led to nothing.

York held on and soon started to dominate the line outs and the scrums. Their ten man rugby however failed to pose a threat as I’s full back Sam Wilson dealt superbly with kick after kick. The half time whistle blew and York had the slight wind advantage. This combined with the Ionian’s failure to score in the first half could have given them the edge. A kickable penalty for York after 6 minutes could have given them the lead but as it sailed wide, Ionians came away with other ideas.

When skipper Danny Casson is on fire, Ionians always have the edge and despite the superb display from the York pack, Casson’s ability to steal the ball and cross the gain line created the opportunities for his team.

After 23 minutes, Ionians broke the deadlock with a superb passage of play starting with a Casson steal. As Josh Thundercliffe and Joe Midgeley combined for the first time in the game to breach the York defence, backs Green and Wilson both showed how to recycle the ball as it crossed from side to side. Slick handling then saw Henry Waine race onto the ball at unstoppable speed and a dramatic dive for the line in the corner resulted in 5 superb and desperately needed points.

As the game restarted, I’s looked favourites to score again but a series of penalties put them back into their 22 for a few tense moments. A combination of kicking and strong defence quickly moved them back into a position of strength but York’s defence held fast.

As the game reached a conclusion, Hammersley hit a spectacular drop goal to seal the victory and give the best team in Yorkshire the title for another 12 months.

The game was not the most entertaining and the rugby was only in part a demonstration of why Ionians have dominated the game in the region for so long but despite York’s lack of attacking flair, it was a huge contest up front and a game involving outstanding defence on both sides. York have grown unrecognisably this season and achieved some massive victories. Their resulting self belief added to commitment and their power in the pack tested I’s to the extreme. I’s however have an army of unsung heroes like Doris, Help, Carty, Rennard and Skelly as well as a lethal strike force led by Hammersley including the unstoppable Heylings, Wilson and Waine. A combination yet to be matched in the area.

2009 Lexus National Finals

Hull Ionians Under 16s travelled to St Albans for the Easter weekend, intending to bring back the Lexus national trophy. The superb facilities and pitches meant the stage couldn’t have been better.

The 12 a side tournament involved the winners of the 6 regional events playing each other over 7 minutes each way. 4 points were awarded for a win, 2 points for a draw and bonus points awarded for 4 tries being scored in a game. Ionians won 4 and drew 1 but had to watch in despair as the hosts Old Albanians took on Newbury in the last game needing to win by a large score. Old Albanians had won 2 and drawn 2, achieving a bonus point in the process. Newbury unfortunately had nothing to play for and looked out on their feet as Old Albanians ran in 6 tries to take the title on points.
Despite having won the most games and only having conceded one try all tournament, I’s had to settle for ‘Runners up’ medals.

Hull Ionians 7, Newbury 0.

The day had started well for I’s, despite still being on the bus when the first game kicked off. Perhaps it was the bright pink shirts of Newbury that left I’s looking overwhelmed but after a few nervous minutes and a few try saving tackles, I’s started to get the upper hand but at half time the score remained 0 - 0.

The 2nd half started well as a forward drive took the ball from outside the 22 to the try line and as Newbury collapsed the maul a penalty try was awarded. Hammersley converted and I’s were in front, a couple of other attacks fell short but the 7 - 0 score line stood.

Old Albanians 0, Hull Ionians 0.

The 2nd game was fast and furious as Old Albanians had most of the possession. As throughout the tournament, Ionians defence was outstanding and the hosts were kept at bay. With no real attacking highlights coming from I’s, the game finished 0 - 0 and I’s new they were in a tough competition.

Hull Ionians 14, Chipstead 7.

I’s then had a short break before taking on the fast running backs of Chipstead who in an outstanding 2nd half had come from behind to draw with Old Albanians.

I’s started this game well with Danny Casson moving to the centres after an injury to Henry Waine. I’s by now were gaining confidence and started to look more like the rugby players they are. Unfortunately they were unable to capitalise on a few early chances. Chipstead then took the lead after about 4 minutes and I’s were suddenly 7 - 0 down.

I’s immediately went back at them and a big tackle by Torkington seemed to add to their momentum as they piled the pressure on. (It did unfortunately result in injury to the Chipstead player who had to leave the field). Chipstead defended well and the score stayed the same until half time.

In the 2nd half I’s continued to attack and a break from half way by Josh Thundercliffe started to send Chipstead backwards. A series of superb off loads then gave Sam Wilson enough space to cross the line and make for the posts. The conversion levelled the game and within a few minutes Joe Midgeley drove over and has the conversion sailed over, the game was won.

Hull Ionians 19, Billingham 0.

I’s started with the same line up and Casson’s ability to steal the ball quickly proved it’s worth as he won the ball just inside the opposition half. The ball quickly travelled down the line and Sam Wilson finished in the corner.

In the 2nd half, No 8 Elliot Hodges broke off the back of the scrum and raced the 20 meters to the line. Hammersley converted and I’s were in sight of a bonus point.
Very quickly, Josh Thundercliffe finished off a move under the posts and converted himself to make it 19, 0. The value of a powerful pack proving it’s worth.

I’s failed to capitalise on a number of chances to make the vital 4th try of the game and the bonus point was lost.

Hull Ionians 12, Sandbach 0.

Ionians went into the final game confident but facing the winners of the North West region who had shown themselves to be a strong team and were still in the race for silverware.

In the first half, Joe Midgeley came off the back of the line with Jordan Help on his shoulder. A powerful drive sent the opposition 15 meters back. The ball was recycled and travelled down the line twice before Thunders carried it and 4 or 5 Sandbach players over the line for 5 points.

In the 2nd half Ionians held firm and the Sandbach centres who had pierced several defences throughout the day were frustrated. As the outside centre charged out of his half, the combination of Casson and Torkington took him to the ground and took the ball off him in one slick movement. The recycled ball travelled down the line twice before Isaac Green broke from the base of a ruck and having drawn the defence popped the ball up for Hammersley to score. Torkington converted and Ionians were well in front.

As the final whistle blew, I’s had a tense wait for the final games to be played, only to see Old Albanians destroy an already beaten Newbury and win the title. Despite their obvious disappointment at the points system, Ionians proudly collected their runners up medals, presented by Richard Hill.

Ionians had taken a strong squad and some players got more game time than others but it was a giant team effort in which the depth of forward power was perhaps decisive.
The tournament sponsored by Lexus in it’s 5th and final year saw some outstanding rugby by teams from all over the country. It was exceptionally well organised and refereed at fantastic sporting facility.

The Yorkshire champions travelled to Wheatley Hills on a sunny but blustery day, with one thing on their minds. Victory to take them into the Yorkshire Cup Final and a chance to maintain their unbeaten record in the competition since Under 11s.

Ionians new their opposition were strong, particularly in the forwards as they had overcome the mighty Doncaster pack in the previous round. Ionians however went with a powerful pack and a formidable and attacking backline.

Wheatley Hills kicked off in front of a passionate and vocal crowd who’s cheers echoed around the ground as a rare handling error by Hammersley gave them the momentum to charge over the Ionian’s line. A stunned Ionians team then watched as the kick bounced back of the post and Wheatley Hills re lined having stated their intent.

A battle of the packs ensued and Ionians keen to throw the ball wide were locked in midfield for the next 15 minutes, with neither side gaining the upper hand. Eventually the hard battling forwards won possession and a series of back moves gained ground. Wheatley Hill’s backs however were no pushovers and some excellent defending repelled the Ionians charge.

Wheatley began to make use of the strong cross field wind and some high, testing kicks relieved the pressure and forced Ionians back. The fast and furious game was maintained throughout the half, helped by the referee who had clearly had an extra helping of common sense for breakfast.

Ionians had several close run attacks but failed to reach the line whilst Wheatley countered several times although their backs never really got the chance to run. The Wheatley forwards continued to test the I’s defence causing several scrambled clearances.

Just before the break, a long range Wheatley penalty attempt just went wide. The half finished and Ionians were unusually behind.

Ionians started the second half with the wind slightly in their favour and began to look the more likely team to score. The Ionians forwards had spent the first half trying to put the backs away and now wanted a go themselves. The combination of forward running and the flare and pace of the backs began to cut holes in the desperate Wheatley defence.

The first try came as a series of forward drives put Wheatley on the back foot before slick handling of the recycled ball saw Isaac Green go over in the corner.

The next try followed quite quickly as man of the match Josh Thundercliffe burst out of defence and a series of offloads again opened up the field for the backs to inter link and score a superb try under the posts. Hammersley converted and Ionians were in front.

Ionians continued to press and some superb kicking out of defence by Hamersley gave them more momentum. A break, this time by 2nd row Joe Midgeley, took I’s from their own half to the Wheatley 22. This time Hamersley looked outside, before placing a delicate grubber kick through the gap and over the line, which he followed up himself just beating the covering defenders to the ball. The kick went wide but Ionians had won the game.

Wheatley who are not a team to lie down continued to battle and as they did in the first minute of the game, they again attacked the Ionian’s line, this time the Scrum Half touched down, driven over by his forwards after carving through the Ionian’s pack from a well worked tap penalty.

The game finished Wheatley Hills 10 - Hull Ionians 17 and although there were several flare ups during the match, it was a pleasure to watch 2 totally committed teams playing quality Rugby over 60 minutes. The battle that had taken place on the pitch was complemented by the sporting attitude of the losers who as soon as the final whistle blew were gracious in defeat and congratulated the victors, wishing them luck in the final. This commendable attitude, typical of Rugby, was then matched by their coaching staff and supporters. Ionians now face York in the final at Brantigham Park on 26 April 2009.

In only the 4th game since the Christmas break, Ionians entertained Pocklington at Brantingham Park, their last fixture having been just before the break. Pocklington were far from intimidated by the occasion and took to the pitch determined to win.

With 5 of the regular backs unavailable, a makeshift attacking line supported a near full strength Ionians pack.

The game kicked off at a furious pace and an almost immediate surge into the Pocklington half looked like reaping reward. A solid defence though repelled the Ionians attack and on turning the ball over, Pock created an overlap with an opportunity to score. Desperate defending saved Ionians blushes.

After twice fumbling over the line, Ionians took the lead through Alex Griffiths after Ryan Rodgers and Jordan Help made ground along the right hand side with a series of offloads the Fijian 7s team would have been proud of.

Pocklington came straight back at I’s and Joe Knight’s kick found enough space to bounce between the Ionians forwards, allowing Pock to gain a good advantage. Having failed to capitalise, an even game in the middle of the park ensued until Domhnall Talbot scored another forwards try for ionians as he drove over 5th or 6th phase ball.

The second half was played with similar vigour, Pocklington showing great determination and commitment. Ionians however saw greater possession and some telling kicks by Hammersley frustrated most of the Pocklington attacks.

Ionian’s skipper Danny Casson on this occasion playing in the centres found it difficult to stay out of the game and on several occasions moved into the thick of the action, making good ground each time. His ability to win the ball in the tackle frustrated the Pock players but demonstrated some of the the skills that earned him a place in the North of England back row.

As the packs went head to head on many occasions, Ionians often came out on top in the loose and with Alex Griffiths able to reach great heights in the lineouts he disrupted much of pock’s possession . The scrums were evenly matched as a giant battle raged in the front rows with no love being lost on either side.

Pocklington scored first in the second half with a series of powerful drives which was immediately emulated by Ionian's as Josh Thundercliffe made it 15 - 5.

Ionians eventually took a clear lead as recycled ball on the edge of the Pock 22 was sent spinning out to centre Thundercliffe ? Who wisely chucked it out to winger Alex Rodgers to race to the line. The kick was converted by Hammersley and I’s gained a well deserved victory.

Pocklington were in the main magnanimous in defeat and should be congratulated for their commitment and team work. For Ionians, Jordan help was awarded man of the match, not only for his work in the set pieces but a great deal of effort in the loose and some powerful running.

Ionians kicked off against York with the home advantage and the wind on their side. A makeshift back line supported a strong pack but victory was still expected. York however who had beaten a weakened Ionians team earlier in the season had other ideas. Although a superb hanging drop out gave I’s the immediate upper hand, York cleared their half and attacked the Ionians line with some vigour.

Ionians repelled the first few forays and then held up a powerful drive over the line, saving 5 early points. They went on to defend a fifteen minute spell of pressure as York showed their recent unbeaten run of 8 games was well deserved.

Ionians who at first were sucked in by York’s expertise in the dark arts eventually began to take control and the latter part of the first half was spent on the offensive. York’s defence was solid to say the least but several opportunities for Ionians to score down the right wing went begging.

The close contest resulted in I’s taking the unusual step of kicking for points and Ionians man of the match Simon Hammersley narrowly missed 3 points from long range just before the break.

The second half was also closely fought with Ionians edging the possession and some excellent tactical kicking by both sides saw the game being played in both halves.

Both teams lost players to the bin for high tackles although neither appeared to be malicious and I’s capitalised on the York infringement with a straight forward penalty kick.

York failed with a couple of long range penalties and a couple of breaks from deep were stopped by the stand in full back Isaac Green who again showed his versatility with another excellent performance.

Both teams were frustrated in attack and the ferocity of the defensive lines left little opportunity for running rugby. Several surges by Ionians involving the interlinking of forwards and backs and a number of well timed off loads were spoiled by the final pass going to ground.

This closely fought contest was a demonstration of how much York have improved this season and the benefits of a having a solid defence. The front rows had a real battle and the I’s back row as usual competed extremely well but new they had been in a game. Not a pretty match but a good game to win.

Ionians travelled to Harrogate on a mild Sunday morning, with ideal weather for Rugby. Unfortunately heavy rain over the preceding days had turned Harrogate Spa into a mud bath. As the teams took to the field their clean shirts were destined to be coated in mud within minutes.

The game began at a ferocious pace as the sticky mud failed to slow down either team and the first 5 minutes were played in the middle of the pitch . Eventually the Ionians backs broke through but were held up 10 meters short of the line. The powerful Ionians pack took over and in a copy cat move of last week they powered over the line. On this occasion Joe Rennard touched down.

Harrogate were undeterred and a hard fought forward battle ensued. Tactical kicking by both sides caused difficulties for the other but both sides to their credit still tried to run the ball where possible.

The stalemate was broken as Harrogate eventually forced their way into the Ionians half but a break along the right wing ended as Ionians’s winger Josh Pooley intercepted and raced 50 meters to score under the posts. Hammersley converted and Ionians took a 12 - 0 lead.

Despite the scoreline, Harrogate became more confident and determined and for the last few minutes of the half and the first 10 minutes of the second half, looked likely to score. Eventually Ionians prop Josh Thundercliffe (playing at Hooker for the injured Dom Carty) made a powerful run through the middle but as his off load slipped out of the hands of Casson, Harrogate countered . Some quick thinking and quick handling put them in a strong attacking position but the move was halted as the ball was grounded just short of the line.

Ionians went back on the offensive and Thundercliffe who had spent the first half on the bench was determined to make his mark. Following up another I’s attack he collected the ball and powered his way through several defenders to score. Hamersley again converted but Harrogate refused to concede the game.

Harrogate by now had given up kicking and realised running the ball was creating more opportunities. They were eventually rewarded with an unconverted try as some well timed passing opened the door for the outside centre who finished a good move in the corner.

Ionians then followed the lead and 2 superb back moves created tries for wingers Bainbridge and Pooley. A break by Henry Waine from his own half then gave full back Sam Wilson the opportunity to join the score sheet.

Harrogate who had fought valiantly throughout became frustrated by the score line and started to lose their discipline, the habit of 1 or 2 players questioning every decision was taken up by more. This marred what had been until this point a good tempered game and great Rugby spectacle.

In the last few minutes a delicate chip through by Hammersley was collected by flanker Danny Casson who popped the ball to Jordan Help who passed the ball wide with all the finesse of a centre. As the Harrogate defence raced towards the corner, Torkington stepped inside and finished near the posts giving himself an easy conversion to add to the final tally.

Despite strong opposition, the Ionians forwards were superb throughout the game and provided good ball for the backs in extremely difficult conditions . That combined with another good display by the half backs gave plenty of opportunity for the wider players to use their pace and flair to convert possession into points.

Individual success for Ionians players

This season Ionians players have gained places in vaious representative squads.

In recent trials a number made the East Yorkshire squad which is scheduled to play a series of matches over the next few months.

Although 7 made the final County trials earlier in the season, 4 were successful, including fly half Simon Hammersley. The other 3 (shown below), Will Heylings, Josh Thundercliffe and Danny Casson went on to reach the elite North of England Squad and gained the chance to perform in front of some of Rugby's top selectors at the full England trials.

Centre / Wing, Will Heylings is amogst a squad of 40 set to form the majority of the England and the England A squads.

Hull Ionians under 16s v Old Brods

Brods returned to Brantingham Park, determined to win and keen for revenge following the Yorkshire cup defeat by I’s in December.

I’s having won the toss, opted to play the first half into the chilly and gusty wind . The ball headed deep into Ionians territory as the forwards stood and watched as it bounced between them . Eventually it was collected and a close fought 10 minutes began.

Ionians had the majority of possession, Rennard and Griffiths dominating the lineouts and solid forward play in the loose gave the backs plenty of opportunity to attack. Unfortunately a series of errors caused by over complicated play in windy conditions enabled the quick Brods defence to counter and drive Ionians back.

Brods scored first with a penalty but Ionians hit back almost immediately when a simple and well rehearsed back move gave Henry Waine just enough room to race 35 yards down the wing to score.

Ionains scored again about 20 minutes in when their slightly heavier pack took a rolling maul all the way from the 22 to the try line. No 8 smiling Joe Midgely breaking free with the ball to touch down.

Brods continued to battle and quickly capitalised on a handling error to score under the posts. Within a few minutes they took the lead as the outside centre anticipating a long pass, intercepted the ball, deep in his own half and raced unopposed to score. Suddenly Brods were in front and their confidence was growing. A further breakaway try was only frustrated by the ever safe tackling of full back Sam Wilson .

In the second half, Ionians although behind were always in charge as the forwards continued to dominate and some sensible use of the wind kept them camped in the Brods half.
10 minutes in, Ionians drew level as Midgely again came out with the ball after another well worked and controlled forwards drive of at least 20 yards. A score line of 15 all and 2 well organised teams both with the players to turn the game made for an exciting last quarter.

As Ionians continued to put the pressure on and Brods struggled to get out of their half, a charge down by Centre Torkington gave him the chance to kick through and on winning the race for the ball touch down beneath the posts. Hammersley converted and I’s were back in front.

Following a few more minutes of pressure, quick thing scrum half and man of the match, Isaac Green exploited a gap in the Brods defence with a quickly taken penalty, putting the unstoppable Danny Casson into enough space to score in the corner.

The final score of 27 - 15 was a fair reflection of the game which was another close fought contest with some excellent attacking rugby from both sides.

Ionians tackle Brods in the quarter finals.

Hull Ionians under 16s made there way through the Yorkshire cup quater finals against probably the best side they have faced all season.
Ionians strengthened by the return of their county and North of England players went in to the game full of confidence and ready to attack.
I’s in their last game had been defeated by Sheffield having made the long trip without a number of representative players (sorry Sheffield, no match reporter present) and subsequently were determined to get back into winning ways.
I’s started well with Elliot Hodges driving over to score from the base of the a scrum after only a few minutes.

Brods who demonstrated great team spirit throughout, took the game straight back to I’s and a long period of stalemate took place in the centre of the field. Brods nearly scoring a break away try as Simon Hammersley and Henry Waine showed incredible pace to cover back and save a certain 7 points.
Brods played a an attacking game each time they won the ball but a potential 9 points were wasted by missed penalties by the full back who otherwise was outstanding.
After 20 minutes, Josh Thundercliffe drove towards the line from a break down and the recycled ball was picked up by No 7 Casson who powered through the desperate defence to score and give I’s a 10 - 0 lead.
Brods continued to battle and scored a superb try in the centre just after I’s had gone further a head with a slick back move finished in the corner.
At half time the score stood at 17 - 5 but the game was far from over.
Brods kicked off the 2nd half with the same spirit and determination that had held back the strongest team I’s had turned out for sometime. A close battle ensued which was edged in I’s favour when the superb Henry Waine scored the first of his 2 tries, the 2nd being an inspirational race from his own half round the outside of some extremely competent opposition.
Brods deservedly crossed the Ionians line again, refusing to concede but the game finished 29 - 10

This match was not only fast and furious but saw some superb performances by players on both sides. The rucking technique of the Brods forwards was a credit to their coaches and their backs were excellent in both attack and defence.

The Ionians back row led by captain Danny Casson were superb throughout and several other individuals excelled but the front 5’s on both sides battled hard for possession and should share the plaudits.

Hull Ionians 12 - Harrogate 6

Harrogate travelled to Brantingham Park on a chilly Sunday morning with snow on the ground. The ground beneath was not frozen and the early morning sun helped the decision to play.

Harrogate were short of a few players and although I's were not fully up to strength, they were able to spare Ryan Rodgers and Alistair Wilde who performed valiantly for the opposition.

Ionians started well with plenty of ball being won by the forwards and several attacks nearly breaking through the Harrogate defence. The visitors however were determined and throughout the game showed great resilience, tackling anything that moved.

Harrogate's tactical kicking game was effective and threatening and although Sam Wilson dealt well with most of the kicks well, poor support for the full back left I's looking vulnerable. Eventually Harrogate gained enough ground to get within sight of the posts and a cleanly kicked penalty put the 3 points ahead.

I's continued to attack and after being held up over the line several times, Isaac Green playing at 10 raced through a gap to put the home team in front for the first time in the game. The conversion made it 7 - 3 and the game continued in a similar vein until the break.

The second half saw a slightly changed Ionians team and the return of Henry Waine at outside centre, the Ionian's attacks though were still repelled by a strong Harrogate defence. A flat Ionian's line had failed to make the most of the ball in the first half and continued after the break. The forwards then started to run off the back of set pieces and the break downs to good effect. Hodges and Midgely being particularly successful, recycling the ball on each occasion.

After about 10 minutes a penalty near the line was fed to Jordan Help who steamed over the line to score and showed another big attacking asset available.

Harrogate fought back well and tried several nearly successful back moves as well as more tactical kicking. With about 7 minutes to go another penalty kick put the within 6 points of the home team and although I's nearly added to their tally Harrogate also came close to more points.

I's having learned some lessons from the York game were better but still wanting in attack and still suffered from poor communication. Joe Midgely playing at No 8 was awarded man of the match in what was an extremely fair and good tempered game of Rugby in the snow.

Ionians confident of an easy victory strolled onto the pitch like something out of a Kevin and Perry movie and trained at half pace for an hour before ambling out again for the kick off.

Appearing almost deaf to their instructions and the coach’s demands for concentration, the players conspired for their own defeat.

Under strength due to County commitments and injury, victory would still be easy as the game started with I’s playing into the wind.

The majority of the first half was spent in the York half although little ball reached the back line as the York forwards sought to kill the ball however they could. When it did reach the backs it was dropped or knocked on as Ionians wasted chance after chance.

The York 10 fired a long drop goal home after a an isolated foray into the Ionian’s half and having been held up over the line on at least 3 occasions, Ionians went into the break 3 points behind.

A few changes were made but the players seemed determined to complicate the required simple game plan.
Early in the second half, poor communication resulted in a spilled ball which was collected by a pacey York player who raced half the length of the pitch to stretch the lead to 8. The conversion made it 10 and suddenly Ionians were in unchartered territory.

For 20 minutes, Ionians piled on the pressure as York defended with great determination and commitment. Without penalty however , they killed the ball continually and prevented opportunities for Ionians to capitalise on their possession.

Jordan Help managed to force his way over the line with about 15 minutes to go and the conversion left a 3 point gap.

I’s continued to pile on the pressure with some forwards giving everything but from most there was lethargy or panic. Poor decision making and numerous handling errors left the previously unbeaten Ionians stunned as the final whistle blew.

It is a common conception that Henry gathered at his Vila on the Sagres peninsula a school of navigators and map-makers. He did employ some cartographers to help him coast through the Doncaster defence.
Henry is described as a person with no luxuries, not avaricious, speaking with soft words and calm gestures, a man of many virtues that never allowed any poor person leave his presence empty handed.

On Sunday 19 October 2008 Ionians hosted a strong Doncaster squad who without doubt were determined to win. Ionians had several years worth of successes and although a couple of key players were being rested, they retained the upper hand.

Doncaster stepped up with their usual ferocity, their powerful pack now strengthened by the recently aquired No 4 from the County / Leeds programme.

Ionians held some of their power houses back for the 2nd half, and for 10 minutes were in charge. Although Doncaster saw more of the ball, Ionians looked more dangerous and when centre Henry Waine was shown a bit of space, he raced 40 yards before placing a clever chip towards the line. Full back Sam Wilson then outstripped the Donny defence to touch the ball down.

Torkington converted and for a while I's were in charge.

To their credit, Doncaster's pack hit back and began to dominate the game as some of the Ionians forwards looked on. Doncaster played a kicking game throughout, wasting so much possession but after 20 minutes they started to utilise what the forwards worked so hard to give them. After several big drives, the number 6 drove over the line and although they failed to convert, a later penalty saw their 10 kick them into a 8 - 7 lead.

Big games from Doris, Hodges and Midgeley held back the Doncaster charge.

After the break, Doncaster looked confident and went all out to win. A kick to no where resulted in a 5m scrum and as the 8 popped the ball to the 9, enough space was created for the I's defence to be breached.

A missed conversion followed by a penalty saw Donny take a significant lead but Ionian's determination to avoid defeat saw Josh Thundercliffe power over the line followed by a scintillating run by Henry Waine which allowed Isaac Green to kick for victory.

Ionians won by 19 points to 16 and retained their unbeaten record but new they 'd been in a game. Although the match had seen some unnecessary nastiness, both teams were responsible for an excellent display of junior Rugby.

Ionians stepped on to the show pitch at Brantingham Park with a nearly full squad and virtually 2 powerful packs. From the start, they dominated the game and the backs took great delight in throwing around ball repeatedly given to them by a dominant pack.

Leading from the front, Captain Danny Casson opened the scoring, followed by tries from Henry Waine, Brad Willingham and Isaac Green most of which were converted by Hammersley.

The ball continued to be sprayed about as the forwards won ball after ball and a series of slick moves created numerous gaps and opportunities. Alex Griffiths again dominated the line outs and the pack in general won most of the loose ball as well as the scrums.

The recently formed partnership in the centres of Torkington and Waine continually punched holes in the Titans defence and Waine and full back Wilson added further tries before half time.

After the break, 5 changes were made in the pack and Willingham moved to scrum half, with Green moving to 10 allowing the ever outstanding Hammersley to rest.

Elliot Hodges playing 2nd row and then No 8 took over from Griffiths in the line outs and Ionians continued to take advantage of the possession and the wide pitch, running in several more tries. Jordan Help who had taken over from Josh ‘Thunders’ Thundercliffe at prop, continued to drive static ball forward and scored under the posts late in the game. Other tries from Wilson, Casson and Waine took the final score to 62 -0

A superb team performance showed the strength in depth of the Ionians squad and left the powerful Rotherham Titans reeling as the Ionian tide swept them away.

The Rotherham players fought hard throughout the game but unable to win any ball, they were unable to get into the game. I'm sure many of their players accepted defeat gracefully unlike their match reporter who suggests Jordan as seen above and or some of the others? are over age. That and other such cynicism penned on the Rotherham website is not only incorrect but has no place in junior sport.

Ionians travelled to Wheatley Hills, not only without the 7 players on representative duties and the injured Domnhall Talbot, but also without their long serving team photographer Simon Heylings for whom I’s are seeking a replacement.
I’s stepped up to the mark, to take on a feisty, unbeaten Wheatley Hills side who themselves were without 2 or 3 players.

Alex Torkington moved from 12 to 10 and Josh Pooley played his first game as a Centre since converting to Union. Alex Rodgers also played his first game at full back. The forwards were all in their own positions other than Joe Midgely who today decided to be an outstanding No 8.

The pack, led by Dom Carty took the game to Wheatley Hills from the start and after a closely contested 10 minutes, clean ball just outside the 22 saw Torkington put Pooley through a gap in the centre and having burst through towards the line, Pooley unselfishly drew the Full back and put Torkington in under the posts.
Torkington converted and several minutes later kicked a penalty to secure a 10 – 0 lead.

Ionians played the remainder of the game with 14 men after a sin binning and the loss of Jordan help but continued to dominate the first half. The I’s forwards were outstanding, with Alex Griffiths taking numerous line outs and the scrums holding as solid as usual.
With a few minutes remaining of the first half, Torkington feigned to Pooley and stepped through the gap before racing over the line to score his second converted try.
I’s went into half time with a 17 – 0 lead and psychological advantage despite being down to 14 men.

The second half saw some giant performances as the whole Ionians team and particularly the forwards defended their unbeaten run. It would be unfair to identify individuals as it was a team performance that kept Ionians ahead despite a Wheatley Hills try under the posts early in the second half.

Wheatley Hills scored again with about 15 minutes to go and were within 3 points as they piled on the pressure. Although I’s still had the attacking flair to score, several forays into the opposition half were equally well defended and came to nothing.

I’s in the end came away with a 17 – 14 victory and a huge confidence boost for those who have been overlooked in the highly competitive representative arena.

Hull Ionians Under 16s v Sheffield

Ionians under 16s played host to Sheffield in the first leg of their campaign to retain their Yorkshire Cup title. Ionians fielded a strong squad although certain schools and outside bodies are seeking to prevent some players from representing one of the most successful teams the region has produced for many years.
Within 5 minutes of the kick off, a piercing attack was finished off by Joe Reynard who forced his way over the line from 5 meters . Injuring himself in doing so he was replaced by Alex Griffiths.
Several minutes later, Ben Twilly chased down his own chip from the half way line to put Simon Hammersley in to score try number 2.
Hammersley scored his second shortly after with a typical individual try of the kind Austin Healey and dance partner would be proud.
Full back Sam Wilson who had collected a number of clearances by Sheffield, eventually found enough space to turn on his speed and blasted 30 yards before linking in with Danny Casson who took the move almost to the line before off loading to scrum half Isaac Green to finish off.
Sheffield refused to give in and with a combination between forwards and backs,forced their way under the posts to make it 24 – 5 at the break.
The second half saw a number of changes, including Brad Willingham coming on as Scrum Half and Chris Skelly taking over at loose head prop. Henry Waine who took over at outside centre had a superb game in defence but also made several lightning streaks through the middle of the field in his new found niche.
Danny Casson opened the scoring from a rolling maul and Sam Wilson finished off a slick move across the back line.
Hooker, Dom Carty was replaced due to injury by Domhnall Talbot who was keen to impress in his first game for the club. Talbot although playing out of position had an excellent 20 minutes and demonstrated his strength in possession as well as his fierce tackling.
With 7 minutes to go, Brad Willingham placed a clever chip over the heads of the Sheffield defence and after some fancy footwork by No 8 Hodges who collected the kick, he unselfishly passed to Green who finished under the posts.
The second half also saw appearances from Alistair Wilde, Nathan Franklyn and Ryan Rodgers all of whom demonstrated the strength of the squad and the options for the team selectors.
Several conversions by Hammersley and Wilson took the final score to 45 – 5 and Ionians came away worthy winners.

The Lexus Junior Festival 2008 / 2009.
On Sunday 21 September, Hull Ionians Under 16s travelled to Sheffield Tigers in a bid to retain their regional title as Lexus champions and qualify for the National final.
I’s were drawn in Group A along with Harrogate, Old Brodlians and Burton and although they had to leave a number of squad players at home due to the competition rules, they still had a great deal of strength in depth.

Each game of 12 a side and 7 minutes each way left no room for complacency and as Ionians started against Harrogate, it was half time before they woke up. After a dreary first 7 minutes, I’s kicked off with a bit more determination and alertness. Although Harrogate never looked like scoring, I’s spilled a number of balls in try scoring positions to come away with a 0 – 0 draw.

The second game against Brods was played with a little more fire. Tries from Henry Waine, Will Heylings and Simon Hammersley capitalised on the posession given to the backs (2 conversions by Hammersley) and I’s started to look like they were there to win.
Although coach Sean Carty had consistently made changes in order to allow players to perform, the final pool game against Burton saw 6 or 7 changes from the original line up against Harrogate. I’s took the lead early as Jordan Help burst through tackles to cross the line and winger Josh Pooley finished off a good back move to make it 10 – 0 at half time. Burton held back the tide for the rest of the game and I’s went in to the Semi Finals as group winners.

The semi final was against Lutterworth who were unfortunate enough to have been drawn against an ionians side now fully charged.
Within seconds of thekick off, Sam Wilson gathered the ball and raced 40 yards down the wing to score. a few minutes later scrum half Isaac Green finished off a move from the back of the scrum and hammersley converted. Wilson then again raced down the wing to score and Josh Pooley and Will Heylings both showed their pace as they raced over the line from distance to make it 31 - 0 at half time.
The second half again saw both Pooley and Heylings capitalise on slick handling through the back line and captain Danny Casson picked up from a scrum to power over the line.
The final score of 48 - 0 was a stark warning for the final opposition.

The other semi final saw Harrogate narrowly beaten by Nottingham who had looked the strongst team in Pool B by far.

7 hours after Ionians arrived at Sheffield, the whistle blew for the start of the final and the chance to retain their title as Lexus champions. within 2 minutes, Sam Wilson again finished off a back move to score and a few minutels later he also chased down a kick through by Hammersley to make it 10 - 0 at half time. Nottingham had seen some possession but were unable to break through the solid ionians defence.
3 minutes into the second half, No 10 Simon Hammersley darted through several gaps to score a trade mark individual try which he converted himself. Nottigham refused to give in and when I's failed to deal effectively with a kick over the top, they recycled the ball and forced their way onto the scoreboard.
Alex Griffiths then joined a forwards charge towards the Nottingham line and finished off the drive from 10 yards out to seal the Ionians victory at 22 points to 5.

BRIDLINGTON ALL AT SEA

On Sunday 14 September 2009, Ionians started their season with an emphatic victory over Bridlington. The score line of 71- 3 is a clear indication to future opposition of the awesome power and pace of this years squad.
Although Bridlington’s defence looked sturdy for the first five minutes, the continual charges from Ionians attack soon broke them down.
Full back Sam Wilson opened the scoring as he came into the line between the centres after quickly recycled ball wall moved through the slick back liner.
This years captain Danny Casson led by example throughout the game and scored the first of his 2 tries in a typical Casson style, bursting through a number of tackles and charging 25 yards to the line. His second later in the game was another individual try when he took the ball blind and cleverly kicked through and winning the chase for the ball controlling it over the line to score.
The powerful Ionians pack dominated in all aspects and looked at ease lifting as Elliot Hodges and Joe Reynard reached great heights in the line outs.
Other tries were scored by No 6 ,Tom Doris, who’s work in the loose, earned him this weeks Man of the Match award. Forwards Elliot Hodges and Joe Midgely also forced their way over the line and Will Heylings (2 tries), Henry Waine and new addition Josh Pooley (2 tries) demonstrated the pace and power of the back line.
The kicking duties were shared out after no 10 Hammersley converted 4.
The game was stopped 10 minutes into the second half due to an unfortunate injury resulting in the Bridlington No 7 being taken to hospital by ambulance.
In the 40 minutes played, Ionians scored 11 tries and showed their determination to retain their Lexus and Yorkshire titles.

On Sunday 27 April 2008 The final of the Yorkshire Cup was played at Brantingham Park along with the plate final between Rotherham and Guisborough. The events drew large groups of supporters and the atmosphere was buzzing as the players stepped onto the pitch.
Ionians were keen to regain their title which they lost last year after being unable to play their first round match on the allotted date and were disqualified without having taken to their field.
I’s in this years competition had beaten Malton and Norton, Old Brodleians, Barnsley and Otley on the way and were favourites for the title having already beaten Doncaster several times this season.
The powerful Donny team are always fierce opposition and the over confidence that had affected some Ionians players after their win at Otley seemed to have drained away and was replaced by some real tension. Ionians were without 2nd row Joe Reynard due to injury, resulting in them having the slightly smaller pack and the lineout having to be rearranged.
Ionians game plan was to utilise the pace and flair in the back line which throughout the season had capitalised on the clean ball they were often presented with. In the first few minutes a slick move which saw No 7 Casson come into the line created an opportunity for winger Ben Bainbridge to finish in the corner but the ball slipped through his hands and Doncaster cleared from the resulting scrum.
Ionians immediately came back and a when awarded a penalty just outside the 22, Skipper Simon Hammersley, hoping to put some points on the board, opted to go for goal. The kick drifted wide and Doncaster cleared again.
The game at this stage was far from flowing as errors and indiscipline on both sides led to stoppage after stoppage. Eventually ,Casson again stepped into the line and burst through the defence making 25 meters before off loading to Heylings who was stopped just short of the line by a desperate Doncaster defence. As the ball was recycled, Full back Sam Wilson raced into the line and straight through a gap left by the scrambling defence and scored the first try to settle the Ionians nerves.

Doncaster came straight back with several flowing moves, one of which almost saw the No 4 break through as he joined the backline. Strong defence though rebuffed the attack and Ionians went into the break with a 5-0 lead.

The second half saw the game improve as the nerves had gone and both sides were determined to play their best Rugby. Ionians saw more of the ball with No 8 Hodges jumping at 2 taking most of the line outs. Doncaster battled hard and eventually the outside centre who was outstanding throughout, broke through in the middle of the park. A try saving tackle from Wilson saved Ionians blushes and after several more phases of play, the ball reached the Ionians left wing Henry Waine who flew down the line to put I’s 10 points clear.

Chris Skelley took to the field for Jordan Help and Alistair Wilde who had come on in the second row were the first of several changes to the front 5. Ionians were now starting to dominate and Doncaster only had 15 minutes to defy the odds. To their credit they continued to battle but as I’s again were stopped short of the line, the ball was recycled to Man of the Match Will Heylings who leapt like a salmon over 2 defenders to put Ionians out of sight. Hammersley who had kicked Ionians out of trouble several times, added the conversion.

Just before the end, a try from Casson who took a pass from Wilde giving him enough space to burst through the line and score. This left Hammersley the final task of taking the score to 24-0.

Doncaster should be proud of their efforts but Ionians were worthy winners and maintained their 100 % record in the Yorkshire cup since Under 12s. This also rounded off a fantastic season in which the whole squad contributed to numerous outstanding team performances. On this occasion some spent most of the game eagerly waiting to get on but all should feel part of this year’s achievements.

On Sunday 27 April 2008 Ionians under 15s take on Doncaster in the Yorkshire Cup final. Kick off is at 2.30 pm at Brantingham Park,the home of Hull Ionians.(For direction see the Hull ionians website).
This is guaranteed to be a great match with both sides able to demonstrate the best junior Rugby has to offer. All supporters and Rugby enthusiasts are welcome.
The game is preceeded by the Yorkshire plate final between Rotherham and Guisborough, 2 more great sides.

Hull Ionians 34 – Bridlington 12

Ionians entered the pool this week after being let down by Newark and also knowing they would be playing without 6 of the squad who were representing the county. Bridlington agreed to travel and came ready for a game.
Ionians turned out a bare 15 with a very different front 5 and back line were also ready for a game. Bridlington started with the ball and after a few passages of play were forced backwards and a poor pass under pressure was intercepted by Torkington near the line who scored the first of his 3 tries.
Ionians forwards continued to dominate and combining technique with aggression, recycled ball after ball. Joe Reynard came close with about 10 minutes gone but failed to ground the ball. As Bridlington failed to take advantage of the error, Joe Midgley picked up and drove over to score.
Both tries were unconverted and Bridlington regrouped but were unable to break the Ionians defence. The Ionians forwards continued to dominate and some excellent back moves were thwarted by the solid Brid defence. Wingers Bainbridge and Rodgers both having come close. Eventually Bainbridge got the space to run and crossed from about 20 meters out. Torkington also scored again after a breaking blind.
The half time score line of 20 – 0 was a fair reflection although had some of the Brid players concentrated more on playing than talking, the gap may have been less.
The 2nd half saw Ionians come close several times but good defence on the wings kept them out. With 10 minutes gone a quick tap penalty in his own 22 gave the Brid No 10 Ben Johnson enough room to race down the centre of the field to score. Johnson converted his own try and Bridlington started to grow in confidence.
Good attacking Rugby and good handling led to a try for each side, Bainbridge scoring his second for Ionians. The Bridlington 13 touching down for them. As the Ionians forwards continued to win the ball and out power their opposition, a final individual try from Torkington sealed the victory and the conversion put his individual points tally to 19.
Although some missed tackling allowed Bridlington to score twice in the game, this was an excellent team performance and although each player should be congratulated, Tom Doris, Alistair Wilde and Henry Waine deserve special mentions. Joe Midgely was also awarded man of the match.

Ionians travelled to West Yorkshire for their first game in 3 weeks since their Yorkshire Cup semi Final success. Ionians, who were without No 10 Simon Hammersley and back row Danny Casson, rearranged and still ran out with a formidable line up. Old Brods who have proven themselves to be a well drilled and talented side were far from overawed. The home side demonstrated a determination to win and their commitment and ferocity gave a rude awakening to some of the Ionians players who have developed casual and over confident attitudes of late.
Despite the aggressive start by Brods, Ionian’s front 5 dominated throughout. In the scrums, particularly they provided a solid platform in attack and hooker Dom Carty won a number against the head.

Ionians who had started playing up the hill and against the wind, failed to capitalise on their possession and after about 5 minutes Old Brods picked up untidy line out ball and the collecting home player raced over the line from about 25 yards. The conversion drifted wide and Ionians regrouped 5 nil down.
Despite the elements, Ionians pushed back up field and had a number of opportunities to breach the defence. The Brods back line, supported by their back row repelled a number of charges forward by the Ionians attack. During this sustained period of pressure, a charged down kick touched down over the line was disallowed and No 8 Hodges reached the line from the base of the scrum but was deemed to have been held up. A move from the resulting scrum was fumbled and Brods kicked out of danger.

Brods who had already carried one penalty into the Ionians brick wall opted for the kick when awarded another inside the Ionian’s half with only a few minutes of the first period remaining. A long and accurate kick saw them go into the break with an 8 point lead.
I’s started the 2nd half determined to take advantage of the slope and the wind and continued to dominate in the forwards. The attacking back line were held back several times before creating an overlap along the right and with speed men Heylings and Bainbridge outside him, Full back Henry Waine inadvertently placed a perfect pass into the hands of a defending centre who raced the length of the pitch to score under the posts. The easy kick then gave a 15 point lead with about 20 minutes to go.
As the noise of the home supporters reflected the excitement of having victory insight, Ionians counted to ten before going straight back down the hill and powering over the line 3 times. The first try came from a series of forward drives finished off by Joe Rennard, the second being scored by Man of the Match Josh Thundercliffe in a similar fashion.
Both tries were unconverted and still trailing by 5 points, Ionians made series of breaks down both wings to no avail.

Ionians in traditional fashion made several changes ensuring the whole squad played and despite 3 of the front 5 being replaced continued to dominate.
With 7 minutes to go, centre Will Heylings, whose attempt to score from half way had been disallowed after his foot brushed the touchline, picked up the ball from the base of a ruck and forced his way through a gap to touch down and draw the game level. Stand in kicker Torkington converted and for the first time Ionians were in front. Brods refused to give in and fought hard for the remaining period but failed to breach the strong Ionians defence.

On a damp windy morning, Ionians travelled to Otley to take on last years Yorkshire Cup winners on their own turf.
Despite the poor facilities for juniors and the long cross country trek to the pitches, I’s were fired up and ready to go as they kicked off into the wind. Otley appeared a little taken back by the ferocity and spent the first five minutes on the back foot. An early break down the right by centre Will Heylings could have put Ionians ahead but as he stepped inside, the Otley back row, which were outstanding throughout stopped him short.
The game continued in the same vein throughout the first half as I’s charged unsuccessfully into the wind and at the solid Otley defence.

The Ionians captain and stand off, Simon Hammersley fighting a against a leg injury, dominated the Ionians attack but despite strong scrummaging and numerous lineout wins, I’s were unable to capitalise.
Although the whole Otley team defended well, The no 8 and open side flanker disrupted attack after attack, stealing the ball on numerous occasions.
At half time the score remained 0-0 but Ionians confidence was up,knowing the wind was behind them for the remaining 30 minutes.

Otley started well as the I’s pack stood and watched as the kick off bounced into touch and for the first time Otley looked a threat.
Ionians cleared with a long deep kick and for 10 minutes the pressure was turned around. I’s made a few changes and Ryan Rodgers made an immediate impact with a tackle Jamie Noon would have been proud of.

Otley refused to give in and broke out through the heart of the I’s midfield. Danny Casson the I’s no 7 not wanting to be out done by his opposite number covered back and rounded off another solid performance with a try saving tackle. Otley continued to exert the pressure and the no 7 forced his way over the line to put the home team ahead. The conversion attempt was blown wide and Otley had a 5 – 0 lead.
Ionians took a deep breath and having realised the reality of the situation, went straight back at their impressive opposition. After a few plays, Hammersley put a long searching kick deep into the Otley 22 and a sustained attack looked like ending in a score. Otley escaped after some accidental obstruction and some ill discipline saw a penalty awarded to the defence which took them well into the Ionians half.
With 6 minutes to go, Ionians punched deep into the Otley half and as a scrum was awarded to them just outside the 22. A brief moment of serenity spread to their supporters as a clear opportunity to score was presented.
As the solid Ionians pack put the ball in the hands of scrum half Brad Willingham, Henry Waine who had moved to full back set off on a run which would lead to the winning score. As the ball reached Hammersley , Waine turned on the gas and burst onto the ball at such speed the defence didn’t have time to think. As they all went towards him he laid the ball off to Will Heylings who blasted into the open space and touched down under the posts.

Hammersley converted putting Ionians 2 points ahead with only 4 minutes to go. Otley who had fought for 56 minutes were not about to give up and went straight back at I’s but failed to pierce the reinvigorated visitors.
As the final whistle sounded, Ionians congratulated themselves on a deserved victory but at the same time acknowledged the worth of their opponents.

Ionians travelled to the new Scarborough ground with it’s sea view and sea breeze to match. The I’s squad was missing several players but turned a strong team out to take on a Scarborough team made up of several age groups.

Scarborough started the game on the back foot as Hammersley’s kick off into the wind hung in the air just long enough for I’s pack to arrive. From that moment on Ionians had nearly all the possession, Scarborough to their credit however defended extremely well.

After a few unsuccessful kicks over the top, Ionians began to run the ball as the forwards recycled it again and again. 5 minutes in, 2nd row Joe Rennard picked up at the breakdown and drove over the line from 5 yards out. The kick went astray in the wind and Scarborough recommenced the game with a kick off almost reaching the Sea. Ionians took advantage of the scrum back and started a series of attacks which saw the ball moved through the backs both ways again and again. Ionians broke through the first line of defence time after time from the base of the rucks, the centres and the wings but the opposition kept them out until 20 minutes in when winger Ben Bainbridge forced his way over the line.

The ball was occasionally fumbled and spilled throughout the game, mainly due to the blustery wind but line outs and scrums won against the head gave Ionians possession to experiment.
Just before half time, Alistair Wilde having already earned praise for his efforts in the loose, drove over the line to make it 15 – 0.

Half time saw a number of changes as Joe Midgely moved to no 8, centre Torkington moved to 10 and Sam Wilson went to full back. Within 5 minutes, Will Heylings broke through the line and powered his way under the posts from around the 22 metre line. Torkington made the kick and then moved to Scrum half for the remainder of the game.

A surprise Drop goal from Hammersley took the score to 25-0 with about 15 minutes to go. Ryan Rodgers then scored, converted by Wilson and Josh Thundercliffe who had enjoyed numerous charges at the defence throughout the game eventually scored under the posts.

Joe Midgely having played well all game but particularly since his change to no 8, converted the try and rounded off his man of the match performance.

On Saturday 16 Feb, Ionians travelled down to Harlequins for a day of Rugby.
The outing included training with some Quins coaches and 1st Team players as well as watching the Premiership match against Worcester.

As we arrived it became apparent that Global warming had taken a day off and unexpected cold weather had caught some of the locals under dressed. Ever the gentleman, John Doris did his best to keep them warm until adequate clothing arrived.

A good training session took place with South African International Gary Botha and the Quins back row player Tom Guest helping out, both were grateful for the lesson.

After a tour of the facilities we watched a closely fought first half.Worcester who are desperate for points spent a lot of time on the back foot but Quins failed to capitalise on all the possession, mostly due to poor kicking.

At half time I's took to the pitch and were presented with a signed shirt in front of crowd of about 8000 although some of the lads appeared to have their eyes on other things.

In the 2nd half, Harlequins justified their mid table position, running in several tries and finishing 36 -15 winners.

The monotony of the long journey back was broken only by painful renditions by Will Heylings of a never ending supply of once popular songs.

Having played their 3rd round Yorkshire cup match early, Ionians went into the pool for a game this week and having drawn Driffield at home, I’s took the opportunity to try out a few positional changes.
Torkington moved to fly half and Sam Wilson stepped into the centres and a number of forwards changes slightly altered the make up of the recently successful and powerful pack.
Playing into the wind, Ionians received the ball and after a number of phases Matt Butler crossed the line to open the score. The sequence was the first indication of how the referee wanted the game to flow and would play the advantage where possible.
Ionians continued to recycle the ball and dominate possession, but Driffield to their credit battled hard in the forwards and fought to disrupt Ionians plans.
A series of trys from Midgely, Butler and others followed and I’s went into the break well in front. Some superb ball carrying by Thundercliffe, Griffiths and Help had made a number of forward moving platforms for the backs to capitalise on and score.

The second half saw a few Ionians changes but the pattern of the game remained the same. Rennard, Hodges and Midgely continued to make yardage and the Ionians backs followed the example. Bainbridge, Hammersley playing at 15 and Daniel ‘Roy’ Casson playing in the centre were outstanding. A number of tries resulted as I’s reached 56 points.
The final score was altered in the last play of the match when Driffield demonstrated their determination and enthusiasm for the game, crossing the line after kicking out of defence and out chasing the on looking opposition.

Having already triumphed over South Yorkshire giants Doncaster and Rotherham since Christmas in the normal fixture list, Ionians travelled to Barnsley for the 3rd round of the Yorkshire cup. I's were virtually up to strength which is a testament to the players whose commitment through a number of tough games has been unquestioned.

Ionians skipper Simon Hammersley, opted to play the first half facing into the blustery wind. A move which proved to be right as a tired Barnsley struggled against it in the second half.

The Kick off fell to Tom Doris whose safe hands then carried the ball back at the Barnsley pack and started a string of pick and drives by the I’s forwards who held onto possession for the majority of the game. Joe Rennard, Elliot Hodges and particularly Josh Thundercliffe made good yardage from recycled ball throughout the game, capitalising on the good work by the whole of the Ionians pack. Barnsley to their credit defended extremely well and their tackling, particularly in the forwards was outstanding.

10 Minutes into the game, pressure on Barnsley possession in their own 22, saw them spill the ball and Ionians no 6 Tom Doris picked up the ball and headed for the line. Good defence forced him to touch down just short giving Barnsley the put in at another scrum.
The Barnsley front row stepped up under pressure to face the Ionian’s props of Josh Thundercliffe and Jordan Help. They were however unable to deal with the strength and developing technique of the powerful duo who were supported by a strong second row pairing of Midgely and Rennard. I’s Hooker Dom Carty took advantage and struck against the head for the first of many during the game. Taking advantage of the steal, Scrum Half Brad Willingham grabbed the ball and raced blind. Having put in a clever inside dummy, he found enough space to cross the line for the first score. (Carty who’s work in the loose often goes un reported was later awarded Man of the Match and after the game proudly paraded in the gold sequined waistcoat which goes with the title).

10 Minutes later, after more concerted pressure, No 8 Elliot Hodges picked up from the base of a scrum in the Barnsley 22 after yet another steal by Carty. Hodges having looked outside, stepped back in an carried 2 defenders with him over the line to score. By this time Casson and Thundercliffe had both come close to scoring but had just been held back by the desperate Barnsley defence.
Hammersley’s conversion attempt was just blown wide and Ionians went into the break with a 10 – 0 lead. By this point the backs had not seen as much ball as they are used to but the Ionians forwards had dominated the game and could only be criticised for a few too many infringements in the loose.

With the wind behind them in the second half, Ionians started well with one attack after another. Barnsley however to their credit had far from given up and continued to battle and made several forays into the Ionians half. Their back line also defended well and as Ionians moved the ball out to their wings, they were continually stopped short. Some superb covering by the Barnsley open side is also worthy of comment.

Ionians managed to score twice more by the end of the game and demonstrated their ability to combine individual flair with changing game plans and strategies. Those who on this occasion spent the first half on the bench should also be pleased with their performance, particularly Alex Griffiths whose tackling was exceptional.
Barnsley were gracious in defeat and provided a welcoming atmosphere in the club house after the game where the efforts of both teams and the referee were complemented.

Rotherhan Titans

Ionians tame the Titans

On Sunday 20 January 2007 Hull Ionians under 15s v Rotherham Titans.

Ionians prepared for their Yorkshire Cup 3rd round clash with Barnsley, with a home game against Rotherham Titans. Having taken on Doncaster last week, they knew they were going into another tough match and as Rotherham took to the field, their size and strength became obvious. Ionians were also aware of a number of Rotherham players that had recently made the Yorkshire squad.
This years bigger and stronger Ionians Team stepped up to the mark from the start and the pack matched Rotherham man for man. Ionians soon started to provide good ball on a good platform for the slightly adapted backline who unusually started with a tactical kicking game due to the strong wind behind them. Rotherham to their credit ran it straight back at them and their full back made some excellent ground as a number of I’s players were guilty of ball watching.
About 10 minutes into the game, a quick penalty saw some slick handling put full back Sam Wilson into enough space for his pace to take him over the line for the first score. This was closely followed by a powerful forward drive during which Man of the match Josh Thundercliffe forced the ball over the line. Hammersley converted and I’s went 12-0 up.
Rotherham fought back and scored from a loose kick out of defence but I’s immediately struck back with a typical burst from 20 yards out by Danny Casson playing with his favoured No 7 on his back.
The half time whistle allowed a number of changes but Casson by now had been ‘sin binned’ for pushing the Offside line once too often and I’s started the 2nd half with 14 men. Rotherham took advantage and scored again but Ionians hit back with a superb back move finshed off by Ryan Rodgers which left the solid Rotherham defence wondering what they had to do.
Rotherham again struck back and started to pile on the pressure but the Ionians backs rewarded the huge effort by the forwards with superb trys from Henry Waine and Matt Butler, the latter following a superb break from Simon Hammersley who side stepped 4 tackles before throwing out a long pass to create the try.
The game finished 36 – 19 and was a another demonstration of open flowing rugby. Although Rotherham were disappointed, they are one of the few teams in recent seasons to have breached the Ionians defence on more than a few occasions.

Doncaster

Ionians travelled to their Old rivals Doncaster for their first game since the Christmas break. I’s took a full squad of players except for the injured Centre Will Heylings who was once again replaced by the Yorkshire Open side flanker Danny Casson.
The mighty Doncaster pack started with their usual intensity and where I’s have previously found themselves on the back foot for a while, on this occasion they matched them man for man from the start.

The first 15 minutes were closely fought, with possession being shared evenly until a penalty was awarded to Doncaster in range of their fly half who took the opportunity to make it 3 – 0.
Ionians came straight back and after another closely fought period, they crossed the line with a powerful forward drive being finished off by Joe Midgely.

Thanks to some excellent refereeing, the game continued to be fast and flowing and was a great spectacle for both sets of supporters. Doncaster continued to utilise their strong pack and their No 4 and No 6 were both worthy of a mention for their powerful drives forward. Ionians defence however continued to stay strong and unbreached.
5 minutes before the break, a kick through by Ionian’s man of the match Simon Hammersley was chased by Casson who not only outstripped the defence to reach it first but managed to control a difficult bobbling ball to cross the line for another 5 points.

The conversion attempt was blown just wide by the strong wind and Ionians went into half time with a 10-3 lead.
The second half continued as a closely fought and highly competitive game. Changes were made on both sides but the intensity was maintained. Doncaster drove over the Ionian’s line after about 10 minutes to make the score 10-8 but Ionians hit back quickly as Jordan Help picked up the ball 10 yards out and powered through a number of tackles to score. Hammersley converted and the score line of 17-8 remained unchanged after the last quarter.

Both teams should be commended for the spirit in which the game was played, helped greatly by the referee who continually talked to the players to ensure infringements were kept to a minimum and the game was able flow. The only negative was a neck injury to the Doncaster No 10 late in the second half.

There were some exceptional performances by a number of the Ionians players but the whole Team did everything that had been asked of them and can enjoy the satisfaction of winning in such a manner.

I's through to 3rd round

Hull Ionians under 15s continued their winning ways after taking on the West Yorkshire side, Old Brodleins in an exciting home fixture for a place in the third round of the Yorkshire cup.
Ioninans despite not having played a match for a few weeks were still somewhat depleted through injuries from school games and the Yorkshire selection process, but still managed to field a strong team.
Old Brods who had not given a good account of themselves in the Lexus tournament at the beginning of the season, proved to be formidable opposition and should be congratulated on their performance in what was an intense but good tempered game.
Ionians started well and their dominant forwards won plenty of ball, some of which was shared with the backs but most was kept tight as if they relished the opportunity to demonstrate their driving on and recycling techniques. It took about 10 minutes for I’s to break through. Fly half Hammersley danced through the defence and off loaded to the man of the match Danny Casson who powered over the line from about 25 yards out. Hammersley converted the try and within another 5 minutes the I’s forwards drove over the line to make it 12 – 0.
Old Brods fought hard to get back into the game and were denied a try as the I’s winger Bainbridge raced back to cover and frustrate a good move that saw the Brods outside centre take the ball to within sight of the try line. Eventually Brods did score, but one more try by Rodgers put I’s 17 -5 up at the break.
The second half saw Ionians take over the game despite commendable defending by Brods. Will Heylings who had been rested in the first half took to the field looking like a caged animal that had just been released. Within minutes he added his name to the score sheet with an explosive run from 40 yards out. Trys were also scored by Thundercliffe and Wilde.
Brods despite the score line kept their heads up and fought back to score a well worked try with about 10 minutes to go. Ionians responded with a move which saw winger Henry Wayne In enough space for him to race down the touch line and score in the corner.
The final score of 34 – 10 reflected the game well and although not the perfect performance, Ioninas came away having beaten a well drilled and well organised team on a previously unbeaten for the season.

Sunday 18th November 2007 Ionians U15's v Newark away

On the wettest Sunday of the season so far, Ionians ventured into Nottinghamshire to take on Newark for the first time. The subsidised Coffee, Bacon Sandwiches and large selection of other Sunday morning delicacies immediately added to the atmosphere of a thriving Club with a Mini Junior section apparently bigger than that of Ionians.
I's took to the field led by stand in skipper Elliot Hodges who took on the mantle after a series of injuries in the backs also resulted in back rows Casson and Doris filling in as centres.
The well cultivated pitch was only spoilt by a lack of width, but the cold, windy and wet conditions dictated the game would be won or lost by the forwards.
Hodges playing at 7 led from the front, perhaps inspired by his recent success in the Yorkshire trials and had his best game of the season along with several others including Matt Butler and Nathan Franklyn.
Ionians took the game to Newark, dominating possession and driving the home team backwards for 15 minutes before Prop Franklin forced his way over to score.
The Newark defence was outstanding throughout the game and despite a number of powerful bursts by Josh Thundercliffe and Jordan Help, the visitors only crossed the line on one more occasion that half to lead 10 - 0 at break.
The backs on the occasions the ball was made available to them, to their credit attempted to run the ball where others less confident may have been tempted to kick. Unfortunately freezing fingers spilled the wet ball at the decisive moments and a number of promising attacks were rebuffed.
The forwards continued to dominate and Newark managed only one attack when the full back found some space on the left wing but was unceremoniously dumped into touch by his opposite number Sam Wilson.
Another strong performance by Joe Rennard was rewarded with a try from a rolling maul and the kick was converted by Casson with a curling left footed chip that Ryan Giggs would have been proud of.
Newark's defence held strong for the remainder of the game and the final score failed to reflect their large amount of possession.
A solid performance by Ionians only marred by a large number of unforced errors and too many penalties given away.

Sunday 4th November 2007 Hull Ionians 15's v Doncaster

I's under 15's took to the field for their first afternoon kick off of the season, their game having been put back due to the large numbers of Mini Junior teams playing on what can only be described as a glorious Sunday in November. The whole facility echoed with the cheering of proud parents as teams from all over Yorkshire played throughout the day.
Ionians were without their outside centre and power runner Will Heylings, but replaced him with the dynamic open side Danny Casson.
Doncaster started the game with their usual force and commitment, taking most of the possession but the Ionians defence stayed strong and continually pushed them back and contained the might of their opposition. The first 10 minutes, despite the possession by Doncaster was played in their own half and when scrappy ball fell into the hands of centre Torkington. He broke through the line and as the defence closed in, he threw a long pass out to Casson who then put winger Henry Waine away to score in the corner.
The try went unconverted and an intense game of hard tackling and the occasional flare up remained 5 - 0 at half time.
The second half saw a few changes in the Ionians pack and newcomer Joe Raynard started to show his worth, adding height, weight and the occasional burst of aggression to the better Rugby side.
Ionians saw more of the ball in the 2nd half and came close to scoring on several occasions, much of the game however was spent driving back and disrupting the Doncaster attack.
With 5 minutes to go, having been awarded a penalty just outside the 22, Skipper Hammersley opted for the kick to ensure victory after which Doncaster knew they were beaten.
Ionians finished the victors 8 points to 0 and once again showed that although Doncaster are one of the top two or three teams in Yorkshire they can't overcome the strength in depth and variation of Rugby Ionians can play.

28th October 2007 - Ionians v Sandal

Ionians travelled to Sandal having had last weekend off after their emphatic cup victory against Malton.
The team was almost up to full strength but in the absence of Dom Carty, Alistair Wilde stepped in at Hooker. After only a few minutes Ionians took the lead when good ball was whipped down the line to give winger Ben Bainbridge space to ease into fourth gear as he left his opposite number standing and touched down in the corner. This superb example of attacking rugby was finished off by a long range conversion by Hammersley who kicked well until he handed the kicking duties over after a knock to his leg.

The Ionians forwards began and finished the game dominating the opposition pack and had an unusual amount of freedom to run with the ball often with good effect, Josh Thundercliffe making the most of the space . A number of forward tries were interspersed with some lightning running by winger Henry Waine who scored several of his four tries before the break.

At half time Ionians led 34 - 5 Sandal having taken advantage of momentary ball watching after a kick from defense was collected by the Sandal full back who ran around the outside of the static onlookers.

Ionians started the second half well with a number of tries from the forwards and some powerful running by Danny Casson and Ryan Rodgers. The novice Hooker Wilde won several scrums against the head and Ionians had nearly all of the possession.
The game finished 78 -5, Heylings and Wilson adding to the try count. Pack members, Joe Raynard, Elliot Hodges, Jordan Help, Danny Casson and Alistair Wilde all crossed the line during the game.

Although the victory looked easy, the backline who had started the game so well and could have done so much more damage, looked on for most of the match as the forwards picked up and ran making the most of their dominance. A demonstration though of what they can do.

14th October 2007 - Yorkshire Cup 1st Round Hull Ionians U15's V Malton

Hull Ionians under 15's travelled to Malton for the start of their Yorkshire Cup campaign.
Having been forced to hand over their title as Yorkshire Champions after being unable to play last years first round, Ionians were in no mood for to take it easy on their opponents.
Malton having already seen the might of I's in the first game of the season, faced a first half team which was almost at full strength and was determined to win.
Only a few minutes into the game, perhaps influenced by the success of the tactical kicking in the World Cup, Hammersley capitalised on a solid platform and clean ball from the forwards, to kick out of defence for the winger Henry Waine to collect and sprint down the line to score

The second try came soon after when a slick back move and a break from the centres left Will Heylings with only a few yards to travel to the line.
The Ioninans forwards continued to dominate and no 8 Casson took advantage of the solid scrummaging, to break from just outside the 22 to make the first of numerous penetrating runs and score under the post.
More tries were added by Bainbridge, Thundercliffe and Heylings and Ionians went into the break with a 32 - 0 lead.
The changes made at Half time enabled Ionians to show their strength in depth and after they achieved 40 - 0 when the game technically finished the try fest continued. This included tries from Ryan Rodgers, Sam Wilson, Simon Hammersley and for the first time in his long career, the feisty hooker Dom Carty.
Malton to their credit kept battling and eventually showed what they can do with a well worked try by the right wing.
The final score which technically reads 40 - 0 was in fact 80 - 7 and must be a warning to the current holders of the cup. Coach Sean Carty said,

I's travelled to Harrogate without key players no 7 Casson and stand off Hammersley. The strong pack was rearranged and the versatile Torkington stepped in at 10.
They started the game confidently and sharp passing through the backs made good use of the ball the forwards were producing. Bainbridge blazing down the wing to score twice.
Will Heylings made it 3 before half time and Ionians went in to the break with a 17 0 lead.
Harrogate started the second half strongly and although their backs were neutralised on each occassion they tried to run, their forwards maintained the pressure.
A try by prop Jordan Help and a break away try by Heylings eased the pressure although Harrogate squeezed over the line for 5 points mid way through the half.
Ionians finished with a trademark score in the corner after several phases of play by the forwards produced clean ball which was deftly moved through the back line to open the door for Heylings once again.
Overall an excellent performance.
